"Agrarian Roots and Country Pursuits"
Founded by writer and outdoor enthusiast John D. Palmer, The Wild Acre is an online publication with a mission to be the premier source for stories about agriculture, fishing, and hunting in North Alabama. But beyond that, our goal is to celebrate and preserve the age-old agrarian traditions and lifestyles of the people who call this special region home.
A deep connection to the soil and water has always been a foundational part of our culture, not just in North Alabama, but across the country. Yet, as modern life marches on, these ties have loosened. Many people no longer know—or even care—where their food comes from, let alone how it was grown, raised, and harvested. Others are unfamiliar with the untamed woods and waterways around us and the creatures that call them home. At The Wild Acre, we believe this is a great tragedy.
That's why we strive to provide a wellspring of information that not only educates, but inspires everyone with an interest in agrarian roots and country pursuits. Whether you live in the bustling heart of Huntsville or so deep in Bankhead National Forest you can't get a cell signal, our content is for you. We aim to be just as accessible for the novice hobby farmer as the seasoned planter, and for the weekend warrior as the professional angler or hunter.
Although we're based in North Alabama and our coverage focuses on the region, we welcome readers from anywhere. No matter if you're from nearby Tennessee or Mississippi, Upstate New York, or even the Hawaiian Islands, we invite you to connect with The Wild Acre if our content and vision resonate with you. And if you have a story that fits our editorial focus, we welcome you to pitch us through our contact page.
